Benin Yam Festival (tevi-hwé)

What is Tevi-hwé (yam festival)?
Tevi-hwé, a traditional yam festival among the Mahi people of Savalou. It is a great moment of rejoicing of the mahi peoples of Benin. "Having become a tourist meeting in the city of Gbaguidi, the feast of the yam is in fact the gratitude of all the people to the place of the divine providence for having favored the good flowering of the culture notably that of the yam.

How is the yam party going?
The king and his council agrees their people and their hosts on August 13th and 14th each year to the celebration of the new yam. The arrival of the consultant of the Fa (boconon) thus triggers the ritual hostilities. With appropriate songs for this kind of ceremony, the gods will then be consulted. Their opinion is thus asked about the authorization that His Majesty Tossoh Gbaguidi XIII is preparing for his people to begin to consume yam and other tubers. After about an hour, the king implores the indulgence of the gods and then gives their favorable opinion. The king is the first to consume yam.

What is the specificity of the yam festival?
Several traditional activities are planned at the end of this ceremony including, among others, the various public prayers embellished with songs, praise and cultural dances of this people. According to King Tossoh Gbaguidi XIII, the specificity of this festival is that it is the species "laboco" which is celebrated, because it is the first tuber that is harvested. This festival is the greatest rejoicing of the Mahi peoples of Benin. "
